Title: CD/DVD burner software
Post by: Balthor2 on January 13, 2011, 05:45:18 am
So my computer is pretty jacked up and I need to do a fresh install but want to back up some files.
So far vista is awesome for me, only issues are basically my Mcafee virus I have installed.
So I drop in a blank dvd in my drive which I have been in the past able to burn cd's with.
(kind of common sense but I am sure someone will ask "do you even have a cd/dvd burner). Software for it is current as of like 4 months ago and all that.

So anyways the vista default burn option doesnt burn to the cd and locks it so my other computers cant even read the disc.
Searched google for freeware burning software and didnt see anything I would trust to download but did install Nero 9 which I had on a disc from a previous back up.
Burned the files to the disc and I can see them on this computer but on my other computers the disc appears blank and readable and I am at a loss.

So one of you edu'macated folk feel like laughing at me and then telling me wtf I should do.

First, does McAfee have a way to disable the active mode/shell? (Usually called Gaming Mode, which is ultra low resource mode)
Try after this step. If not, down the rabbit hole.

Second, go to your Device Manager: START+Pause/Break, then click Device manager.
Once up, find DVD/CD-ROM drives and click the node to expand it.
Unless you have multiple drives (and/or virtual ones), there should only be one item here. Right click and pick uninstall. Reboot

This will remove the driver from Windows' boot and require it to rebuild the driver on next startup.

If no luck here, pm me or blow up my chatbox in game. We'll get it fixed.

I would just go pick up a USB thumbdrive. Way easier than burning to CD/DVD.

I need to get off my lazy ass and hook up my extended USB ports as my front ports do not work and my back are all full.
Will probably just drop this crap to my USB but I like having CD backup as well

Be chance is your computer an HP?

If so go to hp.com/support and do a search for 8530w. From there you can download Roxio Creator Business Edition. You can install the fully licensed version on any HP computer or notebook.

I havnt had a HP in a long time but the copy of Nero came from the install cd of the last HP I had and I had free upgrades I had downloaded and saved from the days of DVD backups.

Whoops, I forgot to mention it in my above post but I had that same problem with Nero about 3 years ago. It would burn a disc that was unreadable from drives other than the one the disc was created on. I never could get it figured out so I started using Roxio.
