Title: Crash - Win7 64 bit after updating server files
Post by: wwazman on June 20, 2011, 11:37:33 am
Hello, new here, sorry if I missed this.. after looking around I appear to have missed most of the drama lately (YAY!) .. but am unable to find help on this subject, so here goes..

I have a new install of Win7 64 bit.. I was up and playing a moment ago. I have only occasionally played here, my character is merely level 8. However I noticed bots were gone and my spellbook empty, so I logged and came to the site and saw there was some files to download. I downloaded the files and put them in my main eq directory. (Silly me I didn't back up first!)

When I now try to start EQ, it gets to the EULA page and has a memory error and quits.

At the moment I am reinstalling EQ so I can't get that specific error up, but does anyone know what  else (other than reinstalling EQ) I could do to fix this?

new install of the operating system and the game crashes before even logging in. Run dxdiag and see if you are missing components. If you have SoD you can try running testeverquest.exe, or dxsetup.exe and see if any errors get generated.

Delete the
 (charname)_EZ (Linux) x4 Exp.ini
file and reload.  Probably have a corrupt file, same thing happened to me.

been working on some other stuff (oooh, hey.. Uno!)  and a computer so haven't gotten back to it quite yet,.. however, I did go ahead and reinstall, and will try one item at a time (AFTER BACKUPS!) this time...

ok, working (up to login screen) again. Forgot to note that I did do the DX9C install, rather reluctantly. I remember a beta version of Win 64 bit getting very hosed by installing DX9c (since 7 has DX11).

I didn't install any extra DX, but I use SoD client.

Almost every game you install on Windows 7/Vista/XP will install DirectX 9 for you, so even if you don't think you've installed it you probably have.  You do need it, and it doesn't screw anything up.

For Windows 7/Vista it's best to install EQ outside the Program Files directory to avoid the VirtualStore headaches when you need to update spell files and such.

To be specific that is the "/programfiles (x86)" directory, correct? I install everything to the regular "/programfiles" directory because of the headache I have heard others speak of.

mine is in the (x86) directory, yes.

Yeah, never install stuff to that directory. I have heard nothing but headache come from it. People thinking they made this change or that only to find another hidden directory that it stores the original in and uses it over what you replace it with.

I think it's best to install it completely outside of the windows/system folders, Program Files or (x86 one) or the Users folder or the Windows folder of course...  C:\eq works...  (mine is on D:\eq actually since C: is a small SSD)...

but maybe it only does that virtualization stuff for programs in the Program Files (x86) folder (that is where it installs 32-bit /x86 programs by default) and the other one is safe.. I dunno never tried that.

This is the error I am getting now. The ONLY difference is I changed my screen size to 1920x1080, both full screen and windowed modes.

Ok. Weird. I moved the folder outside of the Program Files structure, and NOW it works.

....bizarre!

Thanks for the help! Any idea why Windows 7 does that?

When you change settings it writes to certain files. Usually eqclient.ini. Windows vista/windows 7 protects files in the program files directories from tampering, and instead it creates those files in the virtualstore location. EQ doesn't work well with how windows handles this process.
