The OS updates are put out by the phone manufacturer after they modify it to work on the phone. My S5 jumped from jellybean to marshmallow recently because Samsung finally put it out for the S5.

Yes. The update has to be issued by the carrier if it's their branded phone. They do this so they can add all of the bloat garbage. Verizon is one of the absolute worst IMO when it comes to updates. I have been using either Google branded, unlocked phones or My OnePlus phone since they were available just to be able to run vanilla android with little to no added bloat. In the past, I was notorious for constantly reflashing new software. Not so much anymore. I just stick with the CM Oxygen that comes stock from OnePlus. Title: Re: Ermergherd Lertserbers!
