Title: Hardware suggestions Post by: Rakharth on August 11, 2016, 05:45:16 am Im looking to upgrade from my older motherboard its a 1155 socket and 16g ram max. I was looking at a newer asus 2011 x99 motherboard with the i7 5820k and maybe a dual 970gtx. Im hoping to get to like 32 or 64 ddr4 ram. I usually run anywhere between 12 to 18 toons.

Redic..I don't think you need that much RAM for eqemu, 32gb or even 16gb should be enough to run 16-20 boxes. One of the pc I play EZ on has only 4gb and it's good for 8 boxes with still 10% ram free (it has only 40% free when booted up, Win10 Pro), and I haven't done any extreme stripping, just turned off all luclin models.. that's it. the only issue this pc has it's a 1st gen Core2Duo, 2 cores only and no HT, it suffers from lack of cpu cycles when clients are in the background. it's fine for 4 boxes but once I add 2 more toons they lag behind when following sometimes.
my other pc has 18gb (4-cores +HT) and has absolutely no problem running 8 boxes, could probably run 8 more... Title: Re: Hardware suggestions Post by: Crabthewall on August 11, 2016, 03:19:23 pm X99 is last gen. It's good if you need 64gb ram and are on a budget, it uses the older Ddr3 spec. For my money though, the new Z170 set is where it's at. $330 for the unlocked 4.0ghz i7? Redic.. Yes it uses more expensive Ddr4, but I don't think you need that much for eqemu, 32 or even 16 should be enough to run 16-20 boxes. One of the pc I play ez on has 4gb and it's good for 8 boxes with still 20-25% ram free, and I haven't done any extreme stripping, just turned off all luclin models.. that's it. You may want to review that - it's pretty much dead wrong on all accounts. X99 current chipsets support DDR4 and in fact 4 channels of it versus 2 on the Z170. They also support more PCI-E lanes. From a future proofing perspective the X99 is the best bet - however if you want a very good budget system the Z170 is a good choice. http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/chipsets/performance-chipsets/x99-chipset.html http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/chipsets/performance-chipsets/z170-chipset-diagram.html Title: Re: Hardware suggestions Post by: Chunka on August 11, 2016, 05:51:26 pm Were it me I'd wait a few months and see what happens with the new Zen processors before you decide. From every insider I've spoken to they are supposed to be a pretty sizable step up from the older Piledrivers, and in the realm of the Skylakes for performance but at an AMD-esque price point.

Title: Re: Hardware suggestions Post by: walk2k on August 12, 2016, 11:40:32 am X99 apparently supports both 5th and 6th gen i7, definitely get one that supports 6th gen (Broadwell) but Z170/Skylake is definitely newer than X99/Broadwell.
