I'm installing sod for the first time, do we use old or new nektulos.

I'm installing the steam version,,, theres a server select desktop icon,, that do i chose from those 3 options,, i assume the eqemu one and not the peq

"new" nektulos I guess?  you shouldn't have to mess with that.

did you get the steam version from last year or current one?

the one from last year *WAS* SoD.  if you grabbed a torrent of that, good boy.

the one on steam right now is actually Underfoot or some other client and isn't fully supported though I hear it works ok, with a few minor issues maybe.

if you get the "right" SoD client the only zone you'll have problems with is Highpass.  and you get human models in Desert of Ro but there's a fix for that in the newbie guide that works and is pretty easy to do.

not sure what you mean about desktop icon.  just make sure you launch eqgame.exe (NOT everquest.exe) and put the "patchme" on it.
