My uncle is severely mentally handicapped and lives with my family, we take care of him. He has the mind of a 3 year old. If you ask him how old he is, he will say 4. He is also physically handicapped, he has cerebral palsy and other physical handicaps. I am very protective of my uncle though I don't go out of my way to announce that or project it to others.
That being said, I would be upset if someone called my uncle a retard, not someone calling someone else a retard or saying they were mentally handicapped. Quite frankly, I think someone who takes offense to it is generally just looking for something to get offensive about or looking for a way to show their sensitivity, (ie. ninny bitch). Now take off your panties, and put some boy shorts on.
People who have family members with conditions do not like seeing this term used in this way.
You really should try to stay away from generalizations like this.
