Getting a "The instruction at 0x038ee086 referenced memory at 0x00000044. The memory could not be read." Pretty sure I have all drivers updated, installed dx9 to make sure I have whatever files I might need there. Any suggestions?

sounds like memory or video card issue. download and burn this:
http://www.memtest86.com/download.html#R40a
let it run for awhile, this will test the ram specifically, and alot of the sub systems.
for the video, make sure you have the latest driver. ( latest full not beta), then try to run this stress test: http://www.ozone3d.net/benchmarks/fur/

if its none of those check the event log and post anything interesting.

I get similar issues on Windows 7 when I had an item equipped that I shouldn't be allowed to equip (on my test environment). I haven't used Windows 8 for EQ though, so I have nothing that I can contribute otherwise. Undecided

I just upgraded last night. Other than this issue I like it so far. Running errands, will try your fixes when I get home ix. Also, issue is when loading equal, doesn't get to login so I'm pretty sure its a driver somewhere, but i couldn't figure it out this morning

I got that same message after my little girl came in and started pushing a bunch of buttons and made my screen go really small.  I couldnt fix it so had to redownload the EQ client (Underfoot)...also I am running Windows 7.  Dont know if that helps or not=/

if your running a dual or more processor i suggest you set the affinity to a specific core. this will help with that http://www.eqemulator.org/forums/showthread.php?t=25327
also it sometimes helps to not have everquest installed in program files x64 folder or for that matter the regular program files folder.
make sure you shortcut is set to run as administrator, you also may want to set it up to run in compatability mode with windows xp (service pack 3). and make sure that in the eqclient.ini your video mode is set to a resolution that works.
